AARON BOONE DEFENDS GARY SANCHEZ AGAINST CRITICS
New York Yankees Manager Aaron Boone defended catcher Gary Sanchez when various critics questioned his catching ability. This is not the first time this has happened to Sanchez, as he has been questioned many times by critics whether it be about his defensive skills, batting average, or his lack of clutch hitting. Boone said that many of these critic’s opinions are over the top and incorrect.
Sanchez sure has had his problems behind the plate, especially last season. His bat however has been of question especially with a batting average of .147 this past season. That was the second time in his career that he has batted under .200. In 2018 he batted .186. In 2020, he only hit 10 homeruns. In 2018, he only hit 18 homeruns.
Boone defended his catcher saying, “I think at times it’s over the top and people are blinded by some of the things that he’s done really well.” He also stated that Sanchez has had his struggles, but that’s part of the game for many players in the MLB. This is not the first time Boone has defended Sanchez or other Yankees.
There is no doubt that Sanchez can be one of the most powerful hitters in the MLB, but he has not shown to be consistent. He has also missed many games with injury and has yet to play a complete season. Backup catcher Kyle Higashioka enjoyed a very good year as he batted .250 with 4 home runs and came up big in the post season where he batted .308 with 1 home run.
