Marsha Zazula, metal pioneer who discovered Metallica and Anthrax, has died.
Marsha Zazula, who started a new era in heavy metal music at the Rock and Roll Heaven record store in the former Route 18 Indoor Market in East Brunswick, New Jersey died Sunday, Jan. 10, at her Florida home after battling cancer, her family has announced. She was 68. The Zazula's Megaforce Records, which operated out of the record store in the early '80s, signed Metallica, and Anthrax , ushering in the harder, faster, grittier era of metal known as thrash. “No man can ask for a partner like Marsha Zazula,” said Jonny Zazula in a statement to the USA TODAY Network. “Someone who would stand by your side, support you and believe in you to the extent of losing everything in order to make those dreams come true. She was a mother and mentor to many, a role model as a woman breaking the glass ceiling in an industry run by men. She had balls, beauty, brains and vision.” “She was a sweetheart but she would have taken on Mike Tyson if she had to,” said family friend Maria Ferrero of the Freehold-based Adrenaline PR. Zazula had an immeasurable impact on the metal community and her loss will send shockwaves. Thrash metal went on to influence bands like Nirvana and shape most of the future of Rock N Roll.
